How to Store Your Holiday Decorations

Yes, your tree is already up but was it a nightmare digging through your ornaments and lights? Did you make an instant New Year’s Eve resolution to not go through that again? Now that it’s almost time to put everything away again, here are some great ideas so that when you take your tree down you know how to store everything in an organized and efficient way.

Lights – The most important thing to know about storing lights is to be sure that they are untangled. The cheapest and easiest way to store lights is to wind them up around your arm and then transfer them to a clear plastic bag. Label the plastic bag with where the lights were used so you can easily put them back up in the same place next year. Another good storage idea is to wrap them around sturdy cardboard covered in left over wrapping paper. Cut slits on both ends of the cardboard to secure the plugs.

Ornaments – For ornaments that are mostly the same size, you can purchase a divided-tray ornament container. Line each space with large squares of felt to protect delicate ornaments. If you are really particular, keep similar colors together.

Storing ornaments in big boxes is another good option. Cover the bottom of each box with several layers of tissue paper, and wrap each ornament in newspaper or tissue paper so ornaments won’t touch each other when you put them in rows. When you finish a layer, place a piece of fitted cardboard on top and continue with another layer of tissue paper.

Garland – Do you have specially cut artificial garland to fit a stair railing, mantel, and sideboard? Hang a labeled tag from each section for easy identification or store them separately in clearly marked bags.

Miscellaneous Décor – Putting elaborate decorations away can be easy with the original packaging. Store items with small pieces, such as nativity sets or holiday villages, in the boxes they came in. This will both ensure that the box is the right size and keep you from having to make a label to remember what’s inside.

Giving Thanks!

November 14, 2020 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

We’ve been thinking a lot about all that we have to be thankful for. That led to the idea of sharing some of our traditions where we share what we are thankful for.

Find a smooth pumpkin or gourd accompanied by a gold or silver marker. Pass the pumpkin or gourd around the table and have each family member write what they are thankful for on the pumpkin. This makes for a wonderful reminder of your Thanksgiving celebration for as long as the pumpkin lasts! Don’t forget that pumpkins come in white and other beautiful colors that can compliment your decor.

Choose a beautiful vase or jar and depending on your level of craftiness, write the word “thankful” or “gratitude” on the container. If you aren’t too crafty, print your word out and cut to make a band to wrap around the container. Finish off with some ribbon. Then give everyone a card or slip of paper to write what they are thankful for. Do this before your Thanksgiving meal. Then after dinner, have the host read through all of the answers. This is a gift that keeps on giving because the host can revisit and read the responses anytime they need a reminder!

If you like these ideas yet you can feel your family rolling their eyes when you ask for everyone to write down what they are thankful for, you can still get the same feel with our next idea. Purchase faux leaves or pinecones from a craft store or online. Write one word per leaf and scatter the leaves around the kitchen island or use as part of your dinner table decorations. Small details like this will set the mood and the tone for your Thanksgiving celebration!

We would love to hear about any of your Thanksgiving traditions!

Pre-Holiday Cleaning Inspiration

October 9, 2020 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

The holidays are around the corner. That means you’ll be moving things around. Why not take advantage of this time by doing a little cleaning, clearing and organizing! We all dread it but it can be so cleansing to purge all of the things that you no longer need, sanitize and clean your house from top to bottom, and air your house out to create an environment of order and purity. Sometimes taking that first step is the hardest part of the process.

Don’t worry! There are ways to organize the way that you tackle your cleaning which makes the task much more manageable. It starts with creating a plan of action. Having a plan is the key to success. Make a list of everything you need to accomplish. Once you have the list, prioritize tasks thinking top down.

First, you will want to remove clutter and unwanted items. Ask yourself how much you would like to remove. Depending on the size of your task you may find that you need to get a dumpster. Or you may find if your clutter is minimal and that a few large trash bags will work. Don’t forget to think about things like old purses, clothes and shoes.

Next, you will want to thoroughly clean all surfaces. First, we recommend opening some windows to let your house air out while you work. Then you will want to make sure you dust, mop and vacuum, making sure that by the time you are done, every single surface in your home has been cleaned and shined.

Finally comes organizing what is left over. At this point you can go through everything you have left in your home and organize. Start small with a task such as your silverware drawer before moving to larger areas like kitchen or bathroom cabinets. Even your dresser drawers might need a little organization.

Now that your home is completely cleaned and fresh you can sit back and enjoy the splendor of your hard work. Your home is now completely ready for the holiday season whether that means decorating or hosting! If you find yourself inspired to do more, don’t hesitate to call us for help. We can help with paint, cabinets, flooring, countertops and more!

How to Host the Holidays

December 20, 2019 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

At first, the idea of hosting the holidays can be overwhelming, especially if it is your first year hosting guests. With family and friends traveling from all over for this one occasion, we are sure that you, like anyone, want it to be perfect. To help you become the perfect host/hostess this holiday season, we wanted to focus on five helpful tips. These are tips and tricks that we have learned ourselves over the past couple of years and wanted to share with you. Let’s take a look!

Game-Set-Match

We know it seems tedious, but you should start preparation by writing down your game plan for the holidays. This list can contain who is coming, when they are coming and from where (i.e., airport pickups), how many days each person is staying, meals ideas including dietary restrictions, holiday activities you would like to do as a group, bedroom assignments, a cleaning list, etc. Trust us; although it may seem like the last thing you want to do when you feel overwhelmed, taking a moment to write it all down can help clarify the upcoming days.

Supermarket Sweep

Another great tip that we have picked up over the past couple of years is to never grocery shop the day before the holiday (i.e., Christmas Eve). We say this because that is when everyone decides to go shopping. However, if you have the ability to go grocery shopping two or three days before the holiday, you will find it a little less chaotic than the day before the holiday.

Cleaning Machine

Some might argue that the most dreaded part about hosting the holidays is cleaning your home. While it is not everyone’s preferred pastime, you can make it less stressful the day before everyone arrives by tackling cleaning projects leading up to their arrival. Since every household is different, you will want to write down a list of areas that you can clean and will stay clean before your guests come. Whether it is cleaning the guest bathroom and marking it off-limits until their arrival or deep-cleaning the finished basement, you will want to tackle feasible areas for your lifestyle.

A Little Prep Never Hurt Anyone

Since you had the ability to clean a little beforehand and perhaps already grocery shopped, next, you will want to meal prep what you can for the big day. In fact, the day before your holiday festivities can be an excellent time to prepare anything that is able to be refrigerated and kept overnight. First, take a look at the list that you previously wrote and look at the meals that can be prepped the night before your festivities. Try to prep whatever meals you can in advance to give you more time with your family on the actual holiday.

Help, Please

Lastly, being the host/hostess does not mean that you are inclined to never ask for help. In fact, since you are hosting your entire family, they may be more willing to help than you realize. If you are feeling overwhelmed, try to ask for help whenever possible. We understand that it can be awkward, especially if you are a do-it-yourself kind of person. But in the end, this holiday is about coming together and celebrating; therefore, you may be surprised by their reaction when you just ask. Even one person helping you can make a world of difference during the holidays.

If you have hosted before, what are some tips and tricks that you have learned over the years? We would love for you to share your advice with other reads below in the comment section.
