Everything You Need to Know about a Paint’s Undertone

September 11, 2018 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

If you are interested in learning everything you need to know about paint’s undertone, you came to the right place! First, let us start off by defining an undertone. When you mix together two or more colors, the undertone is the color that shows through a color formula. In essence, the undertone is typically the color that is used the most within the formula. If you used a lot of red in a beige color, there would be a pink undertone. This is the reason that choosing neutrals can be tricky.

Your primary colors (red, blue and yellow) do not have undertones. In essence, you only have pure red, blue or yellow. You cannot have an undertone within a pure color.

Now you may be intrigued. You may be thinking that you need to know more in order to choose the right color. Exactly! That is why we created this resource for you. This is everything you need to know about a paint’s undertone. Let’s get started!

Everything You Need to Know about a Paint’s Undertones:
Matching Undertones.
Undertones have matching colors that look good with them. You will need to select the colors that work with them in order to create harmony. For a more detailed explanation, keep on reading.

Masstones vs. Undertones.
Whatever room you are currently sitting in, look up at the wall and take a look at the color you see. The color that you quickly assessed to be your wall color to be is called a “masstone.” Typically, we refer to the color by its masstone, but it is highly influenced by its undertone. The undertone is what gets people into trouble when selecting a color. The undertone is the “subtle” appearance of color underneath of your masstone color.

Determining an Undertone.
Now we are going to talk about the complicated part, determining your color’s undertone. If you are trying to figure out a color’s undertone, the easiest way to find it is to compare it next to a color wheel. Your color wheel provides the purest form of your three primary colors; therefore, it is easy to find an undertone for primary colors (red, blue and yellow). But what about non-primary colors? Experts recommend sampling a few paint swatches inside of your home to determine the undertone.

What Undertones to Avoid.
The undertones that give homeowners the most issues are: green and pink. Green undertones become problematic against your cabinetry and wood floors. The orange/yellow hues inside of wood often clash with a green undertone. If you think about it, blue is the primary color that creates green. Blue is what is creating an imbalance of color against your warm-toned cabinets and floors. For matching your floors and cabinetry, we recommend trying a yellow or red undertone. Secondly, pink becomes an issue. This undertone is most often a problem with green, blue or violet. Instead of choosing a pink undertone, experts recommend opting for a warm yellow.

Now that you have mastered the art of undertones, you are ready to take on the paint store! Did you know that ICC Floors offers a vast selection of Benjamin Moore products? Creating The Perfect Bed Set Up

April 26, 2018 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

We all live for collapsing in our bed at the end of a busy day. What if there was a way that you can make your bed even more comfortable? Yes, the perfect bed setup will make you feel like you’re spending the night in your favorite hotel! The layered mattress with the well-folded sheets, coverlets and the abundance of pillows will steal your heart away.

If you’re ready to stop sleeping on a sloppily made bed then here are some tips to help create the perfect bed setup.

Gather Your Linens

First off, you’ll want to gather all your linen. The quality and style of your bedding are all up to you, but we suggest selecting something of quality that matches your room interior but is also comfy. The bedding should include:

– Elastic mattress pad

– Fitted sheet

– Flat sheet

– Pillows and pillow covers

– Comforter

– Bed skirt

Crisp Sheets Are The Best Sheets

As much as most of us avoid ironing there is nothing better than wrinkle free and crisp sheets.

Give yourself a head start by promptly removing the sheets from the dryer. You might find that the time you invest in ironing the sheets is not only therapeutic, but gives you that feeling that crisp sheets can!

Straighten Out the Bed skirt

There’s nothing that throws off the look than a crooked bed skirt. Be sure to straighten out the bed skirt so that it hangs even on all sides. This may require the help of another set of hands to get it perfect.

Smooth Mattress Pad

Sometimes the elastic corners can cause the mattress pad to bunch up at the center which makes your sleeping uncomfortable. To prevent this from happening you can secure the elastic edges with a safety pin or corner fasteners.

Applying the Fitted Sheet

The fitted should fight tight. Pull it until it’s taut and secure it by tucking the edges underneath the mattress. You know it’s worth the fight!

Don’t Forget the Topper

After properly making your bed make sure you add a cozy comforter to spread over the center. The comforter adds an extra layer of comfortable and depending on the climate you’ll need either heavy or lightweight topper.

All of these tips seem simple, but when combined…SWEET DREAMS!

Color Schemes for Small Bedrooms

March 7, 2018 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

We would like to address the misconception that white is the only color that you can use in your small space. Honestly, we believe that any color can be incorporated into any type, size, and style of bedroom. If you are ready to fully embrace your small space, we have three genius color scheme ideas for you! These color schemes will work in any small bedroom and they will instantly transform your bedroom into a perfect sanctuary.

Color Schemes for Small Bedrooms:

  1. Deep Dreams. Surprisingly, dark colors work well in smaller bedrooms. The darker shades tend to hide the fact the room is smaller in size instead of accentuating it. These deeper shades can be projected on your walls and furnishings to create a comfortable space. If you are looking for a cozy, den look, we recommend veering more towards warm-toned colors (Reds, burgundies, browns, beiges, and deep oranges).
  2. Natural Vibes. If you love the more earthy tones found in nature, we recommend trying to incorporate darker blues and greens with neutral colors to accent. These colors that are distinctly pulled from nature can help to create a more serene space. You can even try to incorporate darker neutral tones like taupe or charcoal to help define the space.
  3. Nice Neutrals. Do not get us wrong, white can still be a great color for your small space. We only recommend that you veer away from stark white. Stark white tends to make rooms feel lifeless and unwelcoming. Instead, you will want to incorporate softer neutral tones like tans, off-white, light grays, etc. Plus, white will compliment every other color. You can utilize white as your complementary color.

    • Pro-Tip # 1: We recommend buying high-gloss paint colors to help reflect the natural light throughout your space. This will help when you are using darker, deeper paint colors inside of your small room.
    • Pro-Tip # 2: Use lighter shades on your ceiling. The light colors will help to make your room feel more open. If you do not want to use white, you can incorporate a lighter shade of a specific color. For example, you can use a light tan or light purple to incorporate color without being overbearing.

Should I Paint the Ceiling?

January 11, 2018 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

Does your ceiling need some creative attention? You can’t forget about the fifth walls. As one-sixth of the space in the room, the ceiling rarely gets anything but a coat of white paint.  For years, white paint on the ceiling has been a staple in home design because it’s considered the best and safest choice. While there are times when a  white ceiling is ideal based on the room’s decor, in other instances the ceiling provides the perfect opportunity to add some drama to your space.

If you’ve decided to take a walk on the wild side by painting the ceiling you’ll have to decide between a light or dark hue. Using a color that is lighter than the walls with adding more visual depth making the room feel airier while using a darker ceiling color create a darker and intimate feeling.

White or Neutral Base Ceilings

White or neutral hue ceilings are often best because it allows more emphasis to be placed on the furnishing in the room and it accentuates the wall color. Neutral hues, offset intense colors. Therefore, if you have a bold color on all four walls than you might want to stick to a neutral base ceiling.  In fact, it makes the wall appear more crisp and sharp.

In a room that doesn’t get much natural lighting, a white ceiling reflect available lighting providing more illumination. Remember, that white ceiling needs other elements to add a sense of warmth to your space. We suggest woodwork, textured carpets, and even your window treatments can be the missing link to balancing out your space.

If you’re going to stick with a white ceiling scheme be sure to avoid stark white coats. Opt for whites with warm undertones.

Contrasting With Dark Colors

Using a contrasting color on the ceiling will instantly add drama to the room. It also changes the perception of space because the light will pick up the ceiling color and bounce it around the room. When applying a dark contrasting color apply the base first and a glaze of the same color over the coat to soften the effect.

Colors that work well on the ceiling:

  • Tan
  • Butterscotch Yellow
  • Soft/Blush Pink
  • Pale Blue
  • Peach

We are always happy to help you decide on the best color for your ceiling – feel free to ask!

Tips for Choosing Your Outdoor Color Scheme

December 14, 2017 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

The outside of your house can say a lot about your style and design preferences. Typically, the exterior of your home is a preview of what to expect on the inside. Not to mention, curb appeal plays a large factor in the value of your home. With so many things riding on your home’s exterior, choosing a bad color scheme is not in the equation. There are an infinite amount of colors, shades, and tones available for your home’s exterior. But we believe that with a little guidance, you can turn your home into a masterpiece. Here are our five tips for choosing your home’s outdoor color scheme:

Tip #1: Always a Classic.

Color schemes that are popular and commonly-used can typically be your best bet. If you are fearful to try something new, a classic color scheme may be your best choice. Neutral tones tend to be the most classic color scheme for the outdoors. We see a lot of homes in browns, tans, grays, blacks, whites, etc.

Tip #2: The Bright Idea.

If you are looking to add a little spice to home, a pop of brightness can do just the trick. For this style, you will want to use two hues that vary in brightness. You will want a “dull” hue and bright hue featured on your home’s exterior. For example, you live in a white home with black shutters and black front door. To add your bright feature, you decide to paint the front door a bright blue. You left the shutters black and the house white, but you now have a bold color to set your home apart. This is how you balance your “dull” colors with your one bright color.

Tip #3: Primary.

Primary colors naturally compliment one each other. Most homeowners probably will not reach for the primary colors while they paint their exterior, but it is always an option. The key to making this concept work is to neutralize some of the colors. You would not want a bright red, yellow and blue on your home, but you may if neutralized them.

Tip #4: Monochromatic Vibes.

A monochromatic color scheme for your house can tend to look a bit outdated. To combat this outdated concept, we suggest throwing in a complementary color as the front door. For example, you decided to paint your home a light blue and your shutters are a darker blue. To help make the color scheme more trendy, you should have your front door be blue’s complementary color: orange. This concept can be adjusted to whatever color you decide to use in your home.

Tip #5: The Big Contrast.

Homes that are around nature can use the wood’s color scheme towards their advantage. If you are looking to make your home stand out, you want to choose a contrasting color. For example, you live around a bunch of greenery. You would choose a soft, light color for your home’s exterior to contrast the harsh greens of nature.

Our last piece of advice for you would be to never forget your fixtures. Your outdoor fixtures can play a large role in your home’s appeal. Be sure to tie your fixtures into the overall color scheme that you have established.
