Project Completion – Tile

September 4, 2018 by Blake Powell 2 Comments

Welcome to the final week of our guest blog series! If you are new to this series, during the month of August, ICC Floors will be featuring a guest blog series from our very own, Blake Powell. In this series, Blake Powell tackled an extraordinary DIY project, where he built a custom outdoor bar that features a big green egg smoker. He is here to share with you what he learned and show you how you can do it yourself. No professional experience is required! Let’s take a look at the final part:

“In this week’s post, we will take a deeper look at the tiles I chose, how I installed them, and everything else I did to finish up my outdoor bar.”

“Beginning with tile, I used custom Schluter pieces to help give the tiles a nice, clean break. You use Schluter pieces in order to not have two pieces of tile against one another. You will see in the image that the Schluter pieces are featured as corner and transitional pieces to create a much cleaner look.”

Schluter Edging Materials:

  • Outside Fours Corners:Quadec Trendline in Greige
  • Back, Middle: Jolly Trendline in Greige

Pro-Tip: Make sure you use a good tile saw when resizing porcelain or retrofitted tile. You want a straight-edge for clean cuts, angle cuts, and timing.”

“When adhering down the tile, I used two different products from Mapei: Kerabond & Keralastic System. I used these specific products because they can hold up a long time against outdoor elements and environmental changes in the Midwest.”

“When tiling the bar, you want to make sure that the tiles lay at the same height throughout the entire surround of the bar. This will guarantee a smooth transition from one piece to the next.”

Pro-Tip: “I also used tile clips and wedges when installing my bar’s tile. The clips are placed on the corners or middle of the tile to ensure that you get the right spacing (grout joints have the same spacing) and combat that with the tile wedge to help make sure that the tile faces are flush together. The wedges help guarantee that if you were to run your hand against the tile, it would be a smooth transition.”

“For grouting, I chose a similar color to the tile’s color; it was a dark grout color which worked out perfectly for the outdoors.”

Grout Information:

TEC’s Power Grout in Raven.

Lesson Learned: “When grouting outdoors, I realized that I was not doing it during the ideal times of the day. The hotter it was outside, the fastest it will set. I ended up having to restart areas because it was set before I could get to it.”

Pro-Tip: I recommend doing 1/4 or 1/5 of the material at a time. You do want to get too far because you will still need to wipe down your time. During this process, you will learn it is a “go, go, go” process. To avoid extreme heat and the inevitable setting from the intense heat, I recommend doing outdoor areas in the early morning or late at night. Like I previously mentioned, the hotter it is, the faster it will set.

“I bought this door from Amazon and I actually purchased it a little bigger and cut it down. After I resized it, I adhered the door to the fixture with cutterfix.”

Finished Product:

“All in all, I learned a lot from this experience. I genuinely hope that my trial and errors give you guidance and direction for your next DIY project and also give you hope that you too can do it yourself.”

“I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback below in the comment section. Thanks for reading!”

Countertops & Lighting

August 23, 2018 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

Welcome to week three of our guest blog series! If you are new to this series, in August, ICC Floors will be featuring a guest blog series from our very own, Blake Powell. In this series, Blake Powell tackled an extraordinary DIY project, where he built a custom outdoor bar that features a big green egg smoker. He is here to share with you what he learned and show you how you can do it yourself. No professional experience is required! Let’s take a look at part three! What countertop material he chose:

“In this week’s series, I wanted to focus primarily on the countertops and lighting included on the bar. For the countertops, I hired a fabricator, Majestic, that used specialized equipment to make my countertops.”

Pro-Tip:I would recommend hiring an expert to help create your countertop for ease of mind and guaranteed quality. I used Majestic Stone Imports for my countertop needs. They do a field measure for their clients, and you can actually go into their warehouse to view different kinds of slabs from their display. Majestic then can order in a slab so that the client can see a larger scaled version of the countertop. This way they can feel the countertop and pick out the particular sections that they want for each area of the bar. Once they order the material, they will cut it and schedule a time for delivery and install it for you. Majestic knows precisely where each section will go and can install it with or with or without the homeowner being home during the installation.

“The reason that I love Majestic Stone Imports is that they do a 15-year seal. At first, I was concerned about purchasing a nice granite countertop for my outdoor area. This would mean that it would have to withstand all of the harsh elements featured throughout the Midwest. Fortunately, the 15-year seal helps to protect and maintain the countertop for fifteen years. In essence, we suggest Majestic Stone Imports because they provide excellent service, guarantee a lack of maintenance down the road, and give us care-free, peace of mind. With Majestic, you get the most out of your product.”

“Majestic Stone Import uses this tool to get an accurate reading of the countertops to ensure perfect precision and peace of mind with laser technology.”

“After we took the measurements, I headed over to Majestic Stone Imports to choose my outdoor countertop.”

“Majestic Stone Imports used specialized equipment to map out the edges with a laser and determine the measurements of the countertop area.”

“Next, they took the measurements to figure out the dimensions within the slab and determine which area went on what side of the bar.”

“Here is an up-close image of the countertop measurements displayed on the granite.”

“Next, they cut out the dimensions with a saw.”

“Here is an image of the countertop cut into the perfect dimensions for my bar.”

“Afterwards, Majestic Stone Import delivered the countertop to my home for installation.”

“They delivered my new countertop and applied the 15-year seal.”

“I did not want the hassle and cost of running power to the outdoor bar, but I still wanted to light the area. To create an energy efficient and money-saving solution, I decided to incorporate white and blue LED lights. I ran the lights underneath my bar to create the perfect ambiance. I even purchased 90-degree angle connectors to run the lights across the angles of the doors. I adhere the lights to the bar where I wanted them to be placed then used battery packs with on/off switches to incorporate another energy efficient solution. I adhered the battery pack to the underside of the bar to reduce visibility but create ease of use. I also used rechargeable batteries (80 hours) to reduce the need to replace batteries .”

Pro-Tip: I would recommend spending more time prior to the actual construction to plan the lighting layout. You can spend more time preparing a well-thought-out lighting situation and incorporate different options of lighting (i.e., solar lights).

“Be sure to check back next week for the final post of the series. Thanks for reading!”

The Structure

August 13, 2018 by Blake Powell Leave a Comment

Welcome to week two of our guest blog series! Let’s take a look at part two! How he built the structure:

“In this part of the series, we are going to focus on how I built the actual structure of the bar. I previously mentioned it in the last post, but I want to reiterate the fact that this bar was built around my green egg smoker. I was in search of a bar that could entertain guests, hold trays of food, and house my green egg smoker. Instead of buying something generic, I decided to build the construct for myself to fit my needs. You will find that this process is an easy do-it-yourself project. Plus, you can find the materials at ICC Floors.”

“Before I started, I ordered my Schluter Kerdi Boards from ICC Floors.”

“To begin, I built the bar out of Kerdi-board by Schluter. The Kerdi-board was two-inches thick, and I adhered it with Schluter’s Kerdi-Fix.”

Schluter®-KERDI-FIX is a waterproofing membrane that makes an air-tight sealing system to avoid leaks and the potential of mold/mildew growth.

“Next, I marked out the area in which I wanted to place the bar.”

“After I figured out the placement, I gently placed my bar structure into its proper place against the tiles.”

“Here is a back-view of what the construct looked like.”

“While constructing the overall structure of the bar, I realized that I did not properly create a ‘supporting structure’ to hold the weight of the countertops. In the end, I paid for it. . . I had to work around the current bar structure and dig three feet down, in order to put the 4″x4″ posts around the back of the structure.”

Pro-Tip: I recommend either placing your posts in before setting up the structure or better yet, pour a concrete slab for your bar structure to sit on.

At ICC Floors, our experienced Schluter Specialists can help with your next DIY project. From finding the right product to offering guidance during installation, we are here for you! We also have installers that are trained to install Schluter products properly. Let us handle all your waterproofing needs. “Be sure to check back next week to see the materials I chose and how I installed them.”

Prep Work

August 1, 2018 by iccfloors 2 Comments

For the month of August, ICC Floors will be featuring a guest blog series from our very own, Blake Powell. In this series, Blake Powell tackled an extraordinary DIY project, where he built a custom outdoor bar that features a big green egg smoker. He is here to share with you what he learned and show you how you can do it yourself. No professional experience is required! Let’s take a look.

“Framed around my big green egg smoker, I wanted to create a bar that welcomed guests and provided an area to entertain with an ample amount of space for trays and friends. With that intention in mind, I got to work. I want to emphasize that this project can be done by anyone of any skill level with products that can be purchased right from ICC Floors.”

We began by tearing out the existing concrete.

By using a sod cutter to get to the dirt.

Next, we leveled out the dirt and got sand to fill in the area. We used a 4-inch to a 5-inch sand base.

Lesson Learned: I recommend laying stone pebbles down first then leveling it then adding sand for even more structure.

Pro-Tip: If you are not capable of leveling yourself, it is worth the money to hire someone to level the surface for you because leveling is crucial! I hired concrete professionals to level the sand for me because of the level of difficulty. Trust me; it is worth the money.

To help with water runoff, I recommend creating a slope. We sloped it at a ratio of 1/8″ inch: 1 foot.

The professionals began to level the sand for me.

Next, we began to lay down the pavers.

Trend Alert: Big pavers have become a more recent trend for homeowners. It helps to widen the area and gives the illusion of a bigger space.

Pro-Tip: Make sure that you take your time when placing down the pavers. Sit them down one by one and make sure that they are perfect before continuing.

Lesson Learned: Add black mesh (used in landscaping) to avoid having to weed between the pavers.

Paver Information:

  • Style: Daltile Dignitary 24” x 24”
  • Color: Superior Taupe DR08
  • Size: 2 CM thickness

“Be sure to check back next week to learn how I created the structure of the bar.”

Should I Become an Interior Designer?

April 10, 2018 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

Should I Become an Interior Designer?

Are you always looking for an opportunity to take on a home decor project? If you have a knack for challenging yourself when designing spaces, you might want to consider turning your passion into a source of income. Yes, a career in interior design may be for you.

While you may have great taste when decorating spaces and arranging furniture, how can you be sure that such a career is best for you? Before you make a big decision it’s important to know what you are getting yourself into.

What is an Interior Designer?
Interior designers are more than just decorators. In fact, what differentiates designers and decorators is education. Anyone great at mixing colors and playing with patterns can become a professional decorator by simply marketing themselves.

On the other hand, an interior designer has been trained by an accredited school in this field. interior designers hold either a Bachelor or Associate degree. A degree is necessary to be considered an interior designer. If you’re interested in pursuing this career, you’ll have to consider whether you are interested in acquiring educational training.

Are you skilled at decorating spaces?
An individual must have a genuine knack in decor. Getting compliments on your home’s decor is a good sign but that doesn’t mean that this is the appropriate career choice. Decide whether this is just a hobby or a true passion that you want to pursue.

Not all fun….
Interior design doesn’t just consist of picking out furniture and putting together colors. There is a technical aspect to the field. Designers must be knowledgeable in structural integrity, building codes, working with computer aided drawings, and so much more.

Having a broad range of skills is essential for designers because they not only work with residential property owners, but they work along with government agencies, architects, and other organizations. Therefore, being well rounded and highly skilled is important to be a successful interior designer.

Finally, the money should not be a motivating factor. The average salary of your typical designer is under $50,000 a year.

So, what do you think? Is this the right career path for you?
