Tips for Choosing Your Home’s Indoor Color Scheme

December 22, 2017 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

If you are struggling with choosing a color scheme, we are here to help. Picking a color scheme that works and flows well can be difficult. But with our top eight tips, we hope to make it a little easier on you!

Tips for Choosing Your Home’s Color Scheme:

Tip #1: Locational Inspiration.

Imagine your happy place. A place that you feel relaxed and comfortable. Maybe it is the beach or even the mountains. Wherever your happy place may be, get inspired by its color scheme. When you add these specific colors to your home, it will help evoke this peaceful, positive environment for you and your family.

Tip #2: Fabric Inspiration.

The fabric prints in your home can be an incredible source of design inspiration. Take one of your favorite fabrics and utilize the colors used in it. The colors can then serve as your room’s color scheme.

Tip #3: The Influencer.

Get inspired by your favorite color. Begin with your favorite color and work from there. The color will serve as the “influencer” in the rest of your color scheme because everything will be built around it.

Tip #4: Add Value.

Once you have decided on your color scheme, you can use different values from each of the colors. You will be able to have the same color that varies in light and darkness throughout the space. But by using different values, it will help the color scheme feel diverse while tying everything together.

Tip #5: The Range.

You want you larger furniture pieces to be of a medium value and have your accent pieces in light and dark values. This will help create a balance in the entire room; nothing will be too dark or too light. For your walls, we recommend using a medium value. This way your wall decor can be lighter or darker than the walls.

Tip #6: What is in a Name.

Don’t be easily swayed by the paint color’s name. By avoiding the name, you can focus all of your attention on the actual color instead of its name.

Tip #7: Neutralized.

Neutral colors are perfect for pairing with your more exotic colors. You want to always include at least one neutral color into your color scheme. The neutral will help balance out the harshness of the more intense colors.

Tip #8: Last, But Not Least.

Painting your room should always be the last step, but that does not that it is the least important. Once you have decided on your room’s color scheme, you want to paint the walls within the set colors. Neutrals tend to make the best wall colors, but that does not mean you can still add color. If you desire to have blue walls, try and find a neutralized-tone of blue.

Tips for Choosing Your Outdoor Color Scheme

December 14, 2017 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

The outside of your house can say a lot about your style and design preferences. Typically, the exterior of your home is a preview of what to expect on the inside. Not to mention, curb appeal plays a large factor in the value of your home. With so many things riding on your home’s exterior, choosing a bad color scheme is not in the equation. There are an infinite amount of colors, shades, and tones available for your home’s exterior. But we believe that with a little guidance, you can turn your home into a masterpiece. Here are our five tips for choosing your home’s outdoor color scheme:

Tip #1: Always a Classic.

Color schemes that are popular and commonly-used can typically be your best bet. If you are fearful to try something new, a classic color scheme may be your best choice. Neutral tones tend to be the most classic color scheme for the outdoors. We see a lot of homes in browns, tans, grays, blacks, whites, etc.

Tip #2: The Bright Idea.

If you are looking to add a little spice to home, a pop of brightness can do just the trick. For this style, you will want to use two hues that vary in brightness. You will want a “dull” hue and bright hue featured on your home’s exterior. For example, you live in a white home with black shutters and black front door. To add your bright feature, you decide to paint the front door a bright blue. You left the shutters black and the house white, but you now have a bold color to set your home apart. This is how you balance your “dull” colors with your one bright color.

Tip #3: Primary.

Primary colors naturally compliment one each other. Most homeowners probably will not reach for the primary colors while they paint their exterior, but it is always an option. The key to making this concept work is to neutralize some of the colors. You would not want a bright red, yellow and blue on your home, but you may if neutralized them.

Tip #4: Monochromatic Vibes.

A monochromatic color scheme for your house can tend to look a bit outdated. To combat this outdated concept, we suggest throwing in a complementary color as the front door. For example, you decided to paint your home a light blue and your shutters are a darker blue. To help make the color scheme more trendy, you should have your front door be blue’s complementary color: orange. This concept can be adjusted to whatever color you decide to use in your home.

Tip #5: The Big Contrast.

Homes that are around nature can use the wood’s color scheme towards their advantage. If you are looking to make your home stand out, you want to choose a contrasting color. For example, you live around a bunch of greenery. You would choose a soft, light color for your home’s exterior to contrast the harsh greens of nature.

Our last piece of advice for you would be to never forget your fixtures. Your outdoor fixtures can play a large role in your home’s appeal. Be sure to tie your fixtures into the overall color scheme that you have established.

Designing a Living Room

December 12, 2017 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

Living rooms can be one of the most frequently used rooms in a home. With all that we do in living rooms, should not they have a brilliant design? Designing and decorating can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you are starting with a blank canvas. But there is no need to worry, we have five tips to help you design your living room!

Tips for Designing a Living Room:

  1. All Eyes On. . .

It is important to establish the focal point in your living room. Whether it is a big picture window or your fireplace, you want to determine what will “take center stage.” Typically, the furniture will be arranged in a flattering way to accent the focal point. The way you set up your furniture should ultimately frame the most important feature in your living room.

  1. Layers.

When designing a room, most homeowners find it easier to work in layers. The layers of a room are: high, middle, and low. You ideally want to make all of your layers work together to help make it more pleasing to the eyes. Try and avoid repeating the same layer over and over in your design. You want to add different heights to make the room look more interesting.

  1. Inspired.

If you are trying to determine your color scheme, look no further than your favorite pattern. Take a pattern that you desperately want to use in the design and incorporate colors from it throughout the room.

  1. Always Neutral.

When in doubt, choose a neutral tone for your decor. Neutrals go well with everything and they stay current and trendy. If you cannot choose a sofa color, consider buying it in a neutral tone. Afterwards, you can dress up the couch with colors by adding colorful pillows and blankets.

  1. Create Warmth.

Typically, we can recommend adding warmth through a warm color scheme, but that is not the only way! You can add warmth by choosing plush materials and cozy furniture. If you still feel your room needs more warmth, you can opt for a warm-toned color palette. Browns, oranges, and tans can do just the trick!

Mudroom Floors

November 30, 2017 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

Mudrooms are fantastic rooms in homes. They can help contain the unwanted transfer of outside dirt into the rest of your home. If used properly, your home could thrive; creating less work for you while cleaning. While designing your mudroom, you want to take a good look at the floors. The flooring that you choose will need to meet some important criteria: easy to clean, wipe down, and wash. For more detailed help in choosing the correct flooring, we created a mudroom floors guide for you! Let us take a look at the different things to consider when choosing your mudroom floors:

Mudroom Floors:

    • Rugs: Rugs are amazing decorative pieces that wrap style and function into one product. They come in an array of different sizes, textures, shapes, and colors while still providing us with a place to wipe our feet. An important thing to consider when choosing a mudroom rug is that most people will be wiping their feet on it. You will want to choose a sturdy, dark color rug for an area like this. Keep in mind: homeowners tend to replace their rugs often due to the amount of moisture and dirt build-up. You will want to choose an affordable rug that you are okay with replacing within the next year.
    • Durable, Low-Maintenance Floors: For your overall mudroom flooring, you will want to choose a product that is durable and low-maintenance. You will want to focus on a product that is easy-to-clean for this high traffic area. Flooring options like tile, stone or LVT can work wonders in these types of areas. For more expert knowledge, be sure to ask one of our sales staff for their product recommendations.
    • Water-Resistant: Depending on where you live, one day it could be raining and one day it could be snowing. To be ready for all mother nature has to throw at us, we recommend purchasing water-resistant flooring. There is only so much that your mudroom rug can soak up, plus you will need an area to place your shoes. Owning a shoe tray can definitely help reduce the transfer of moisture, but moisture-resistant flooring is your best option.
    • Cleaning: You want to choose a product that is easy to clean and wipe down when necessary. The flooring options we listed above (tile, stone or LVT) all have easy-to-clean properties.
