Trend Spotting: Modern Hexagon Patterns

September 11, 2020 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

The current passion for hexagon designs in interior design can be traced back to the British designer, David Hicks (1929-1998) who was known for his modern geometric patterns.  Look for hexagonal patterns on walls, furnishings, accessories and floors. The hexagon can be spotted on carpets, area rugs, curtains, pillows, wallpapers and fabrics.  Even stencils for painted walls and fabrics are popping up on design blogs for DIY patterns.

The hexagon is also a classic pattern in tiles. White hexagonal tiles for a bathroom floor are still a classic choice. Mixing in the occasional black or colored tile in with the white is also a classic combination for hexagonal floor tiles.  Hexagonal patterns have evolved beyond the classic style into sexy and sophisticated.

Hexagons can be used in all different sizes for delicate or bold patterns. The bigger the hexagon, the more intense the areas of color will be, and therefore the stronger the pattern. Tone on tone hexagonal patterns can be more subtle.  Large patterns for walls and linens make a bold statement in a room.

Like the chevron pattern, hexagonal patterns are a hot trend right now; one that the design world has seen before. The design world is very similar to the world of fashion; what is old is new again with vintage-inspired patterns and colors making a comeback. This time, the look has been elevated to suit a range of styles anywhere from classic to modern. As with all trends, the style will not always be trending, but rest assured the look will have longevity as it originates from a timeless shape. Where could you see this shape in your space?

Looking Up: Don’t Ignore the Fifth Wall in Your Kitchen or Bath Renovation

August 26, 2020 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

Ceilings are often an afterthought of the renovation process and don’t get the attention or recognition that they deserve. In a well-designed kitchen or bath in Indianapolis, nothing should be overlooked, including the ceiling. Ceiling height, shape, style, accessories, and color help determine how a space looks and how it feels.

The ceiling should be considered the fifth wall in your new kitchen or bath and should be used to enhance the space’s character. Paint, wallpaper, different textures, heights, finishes and materials can be employed to create a ceiling that serves as a focal point and enhances the overall design and functionality of the space.

The standard height of a kitchen or bath ceiling is eight to nine feet. In some remodels, increasing that height is not practical or even feasible, depending on what is above your bath or kitchen. Typically, we have more flexibility in the bath to incorporate a skylight over a tub, add window space, or create a dropped area of the room to define a portion of the space.

Here are some common ceiling options to enhance your bath or kitchen:

  • Cove ceilings have curved edges between the ceiling and the wall to create a dome-like design that can create a focal point at the top of the walls. One advantage of cove ceilings is that they help make a space appear taller than it is.
  • Vaulted ceilings create a sense of volume and spaciousness to a room and also serve to make a space appear larger than it is. Most homes with a sloped roof can support a vaulted ceiling. Vaulted ceilings can have curved or straight sides and symmetrical or asymmetrical lines.
  • Cathedral ceilings employ straight sides that slope upward at the same angle as the exterior roofline. The most famous cathedral ceiling is at Notre-Dame in Paris. You can’t build anything on top of a cathedral ceiling, but you can create one from unused attic space.
  • Ceiling trays are recessed ceilings at the highest point with an inverted center. Ceiling trays can add more depth to a room and make it appear more spacious.
  • Any new kitchen or bath ceiling can be enhanced by decorative moldings, especially Victorian homes.
  • Beamed ceilings are another tool in a designer’s arsenal to create unique looks. Beams add warmth and character to a room. You need a taller space for beams so the space doesn’t feel small and cramped.
  • Even basic ceilings can be enhanced with statement-making lighting, paint, or patterned wallpaper.

How can you take advantage of the fifth wall to make your new dream kitchen or bath become a reality? Give us a call or make an appointment to visit one of our showrooms for more information.

Cabinet Accessories You Didn’t Know You Couldn’t Live Without

July 24, 2020 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

Whether your style is traditional, modern, or somewhere in between, when it comes to cabinets, most people don’t think about cabinet accessories. Most homeowners just think of cabinets as something you have to own to store your dishes and the only accessory options are hardware and different door styles. However, there is so much more to cabinetry! In fact, let’s take a look at some must-have cabinet accessories!

ICC Floors Plus Showroom

Corner Cabinets

Using a corner cabinet allows you to pick up valuable space that otherwise could go unused. This can also be an opportunity to select a door with glass to showcase serving dishes or decorative glassware. The corner of your kitchen can become a point of interest rather than a necessity.

Vanity Accessories

Often bathrooms are small spaces that need to store a lot of items! Consider using open spacing in your vanity to display rolled up towels and decor pieces. You can even unleash your inner designer and add furniture features like decorative legs or feet for your vanity.

Things to think about and ask yourself before planning for new cabinets help ensure that your cabinetry plan includes solutions that will make your life easier!

Questions to Ask Yourself:

  1. Would your makeup or toiletries stay more organized with pull out sliding shelves?
  2. Would a trash can or hamper, included as part of your cabinet plan, make your space feel more streamlined and organized?
  3. Do you sit down to put on your make up where space for a chair with a vanity knee drawer would make getting ready something you could enjoy?
  4. Would a matching framed mirror make your space feel more design-inspired?

For the Organizers

Imagine cooking in a kitchen where some of the common frustrations are solved with a little planning. Imagine all of your spices displayed and organized in a spice drawer. Imagine a cabinet designed for trays and cookie sheets so that they stay divided and upright. Imagine a trash can that opens with a gentle press from your foot for use when your hands are full. Envision all of your knives lined up with dividers to keep the blades safe. If you’re a cooking enthusiast, we’ve got the accessories to celebrate your kitchen skills as well as your kitchen tools!

Why Install a Kitchen Backsplash

July 14, 2020 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

Don’t forget the backsplash! Whether you’re completely renovating or simply sprucing up your kitchen, it’s important to install a backsplash for several reasons.

Installing a backsplash has many benefits. It can be great for both utility and style. Should you install a backsplash in your kitchen? Take a look below!

Protects Your Kitchen Walls

The main function of a backsplash is to protect your kitchen walls from damage. Yes, it serves as a shield from water, cooking oil and other types of materials that can ruin your walls. Painted and wallpapered walls aren’t resistant to stains and they can be difficult to clean. After long periods, if they are not protected the walls can begin to look dingy.

Backsplashes make the space easier to clean. Splatters can be quickly cleaned by simply using a disinfectant and wiping the area with a clean cloth. Depending upon the type of backsplash you install it can be resistant to heat, stains and moisture which adds to its longevity.

Backsplashes are a great way to add your personality to your kitchen. They are also great for breathing life into a plainly designed kitchen.

Adds Great Style

Whether you choose a mosaic pattern, glass tile or traditional tile, there are an abundance of backsplash options available to meet your style and budget needs. If you’re going to protect your walls with tile, why not have it add a design element at the same time?

When planning your backsplash design, we realize it can be overwhelming. That’s what we are here for! We encourage you to get outside the box with your thinking before you finalize your selection.

Things to consider

Do you want your backsplash to blend or be a contrast to your kitchen countertops? Do you want your backsplash to stand out or fade into the background? Do you want a patterned tile or something plain and simple? Do you want your backsplash to cover the areas between the lower and upper cabinets or is there an opportunity for more coverage or design?

How to Style Throw Pillows Like a Pro

June 18, 2020 by iccfloors 1 Comment

From vibrant, bold hues to jazzy patterns, throw pillows are a fabulous way to accent or spice up a bed or sofa. Whether you are decorating the couch in the living room or the bed in the master bedroom, putting together the right combination of throw pillows can be much harder than it looks. In fact, mixing patterns and colors can be considered an art. Here are some secrets for styling throw pillows like a professional:

  • Don’t Make This Mistake

Perhaps, the biggest mistake that homeowners make when selecting throw pillows is playing it too safe. The great thing about accent pillows is that they are typically used sparingly, which means that you have room to play around with pattern and color without overwhelming the space. As the largest piece of furniture in the room, the sofa or bed is usually a neutral color. Using neutral colored throw pillows will create a whitewashed effect. Take a chance with your creativity and choose colorful or designed accent pillows for a beautiful look.

  • Meshing Throw Pillows With Your Decor

Are you worried that a specific throw pillow will not work well with your room’s decor? Vibrant colors and patterns work well in any space as long as it harmonizes with something else in the room such as a piece of artwork, the rug, or even a chair. A throw pillow can look out of place in a space if it does not match well with anything in the room. Create a cohesive look by seeking inspiration from another element in the room.

  • The Secret to Mixing Patterns

The key to tastefully mixing patterns is finding a common link between the patterns. Different patterns can look great together when they use a similar color or tone. Solid colored throw pillows mesh well with both large and small scaled patterns. Mixing solid throw pillows with patterns creates a balanced yet playful look. Avoid mixing more than three different patterns together in one setting.

  • Where Should You Place Throw Pillows?

So where is the best spot for throw pillows? This largely depends on the set up of the sofa or the bed. Most designers will recommend placing throw pillows at the end or the corners of the seating area or bed. For a large couch or bed, you would want two throw pillows at both opposite ends. Leaving the midsection provides ample room for sitting or laying down.   For more expert advice, be sure to check back weekly!

Spring Projects: Embracing the Blooming Season

April 30, 2020 by iccfloors Leave a Comment

With the soon-arrival of the blooming season, homeowners may find themselves busier than ever. In fact, homeowners may even be participating in springtime’s associated activity “spring cleaning.” The activity derives from the fact that our homes will need a little more TLC since we are transitioning from colder, drearier months. During winter, we put these necessary home projects on the backburner until the weather begins to warm. Therefore, the opportunity to tackle these must-needed home projects is almost here. And to help you prepare for the day, we have created a list of five spring projects that you may want to start this season. Let’s take a look!

An Effortless Landscape

When you take a step inside, does your house feel underwhelming? If so, you may be in need of some new floors. In fact, flooring can set the stage for your design. So this spring, take some tips from the light and airy season by renovating your floors with this year’s hottest trends, including light-colored floors. From hand-scraped to wire-brushed trends to marble looks, the design possibilities are endless in 2020. Plus, with innovations in the industry, you do not have to settle for only one type of flooring in your home.

A Fresh Look

Every year, the global color authorities, Pantone Color, determine a “Color of the Year.” This year, Pantone Color chose “Classic Blue,” and its definition is not far from its name. This color is described as “calm, confident, and connective.” It provides a peaceful slate for our designs while captivating us through its thought-provoking properties. In fact, Classic Blue is the perfect paint color choice for any room that needs a relaxing yet timeless tone. You can incorporate this effortless color into your room’s landscape this spring for a refreshing twist on your interior design.

A Delightful Addition

Since spring embraces new plant life, we think that there is no better way to highlight your countertops than through the use of plants and flowers. In fact, plants can help provide greenery and life to a space while adding to the overall aesthetic. However, if you notice that your countertops are not as pristine as they once were, you have two options. One option is that you can have your countertops replaced. The renewing season of spring is the perfect time to refresh your design, especially when it comes to countertops. If you are looking to refresh your countertop design this spring, currently homeowners love the natural, one-of-a-kind beauty of marble and quartz countertops. Marble countertops feature an authentic, beautiful veining that is unmatched by any other countertop. However, if you are looking for a more durable & low maintenance countertop, quartz is a great option, you can opt for beautiful quartz countertops. Quartz is composed of natural crystals, which makes it an insanely gorgeous countertop option. Plus, quartz countertops are perfect for homeowners who love to cook because they are scratch-, stain-, and heat-resistant.

A Sweet Escape

With the weather warming, there is no time like the present to upgrade your backyard. In fact, we like to capitalize on this sweet oasis during warm nights by utilizing our space. If you have not created an outdoor oasis yet, you can simply add items that make you happy. For instance, you can incorporate some comfortable seating for entertaining, build your own firepit for warmth, hang decorative stringed lighting for creativity, or make a beautiful paver pathway to and from your house. The options for your outdoor retreat are truly endless – just remember to add items that will have you coming back for more.

A Warm Welcome

Nothing says “welcome home” quite like awesome curb appeal. Plus, spring is the perfect time of year to spruce up your front yard. For instance, you can replace your house numbers, repaint your front door and shutters, add potted plants to your porch, incorporate a new welcome mat, and swap out your mailbox. Much like our backyard projects, our front yard projects are all about your personal preferences. Start with whatever you currently dislike about your curb appeal and work from there.

With these simple spring projects, you can create an inspiring, noteworthy design that is ready to take on the new year. We hope you enjoyed, and thanks for reading!
